Like many families we’re getting ready for the first day of school tomorrow. This is a special year for our family as our first born, baby boy is entering his senior year of high school tomorrow. There’s excitement, trepidation, anxiety, nervousness, you name it, it’s going on inside our household today. On a side note, I’m wondering how the hell I got so old, so fast, but that’s a blog for another time, enough about me. Like most kids it has been an interesting journey for my son to get to his senior year. You know the proverbial roller coaster people like to talk about? That shit’s the truth! I’m writing today because I’ve been banned by my 18-year-old, soon to be senior, in high school son from posting any “last first day” photos on any of my social media sites because he feels it’s a lame thing to do. Since he has had an IEP in school since about the second grade and has attended so many meetings, he is a master negotiator, so I decided to negotiate a deal with him. Sure, I could have just forced him to pose for a picture tomorrow morning, but I’d rather have one without his rolling eyes in it. We negotiated that I can take a picture of him tomorrow but only for viewing by his dad and me… maybe his grandma. He said I could share a picture and blog about his last first day… Eve. He laughed when I told him I wanted to write a little blog about his last, first day, Eve and he thought it was crazy and told me to go for it. TA-DA! I can negotiate a little bit too. <Wink>
Here’s an approved last, first Day, Eve picture of Payne and my daughter Kaitlin, who will be a sophomore this year:
Here’s a picture from a few years ago:
This one was not staged. Some things never change:
I thought about getting all sentimental about how far he’s come and how proud of him I am that he’s about to enter his final year in public school systems which completely misunderstand dyslexic students like him and how I wish I could have been one of those parents who sends their dyslexic child to an expensive, private school that understands him, but I’m not going to do that. Today, I’m just going to wish both of my children a fun, exciting, successful school year and to my Son, Payne, Happy Last First Day Eve!
