Take the time to think about this...
What would you think if you had a high school student who turned in an assignment, a whole page of writing that looked just like this? There’s a good chance that this student would enter your class without an IEP (this student happens to have an IEP, many like him don't.) How would you handle it?

After you’ve thought about how you would handle it, know that this student in the past has had one of his papers crumpled up by a teacher and thrown into the garbage can in front of the class because the teacher thought that’s where this level of writing belonged. You see, he is dyslexic and dysgraphic so when he writes there are many misspellings, reversals, transpositions and sometimes it looks like one giant word with no spaces. This is just a small sample of his writing and this sample included lines as a guide, worksheets with no lines are pretty much illegible.
Now consider, if there were more understanding of dyslexia and Orton-Gillingham training in our public schools.
campspringcreek.org/our-blog/2015/12/14/yancey-county-principal-believes-orton-gillingham-training-played-critical-role-in-school-turnaroundThere are schools that are doing this, for example, “Yancey County Principal Believes Orton Gillingham Training Played Critical Role In School Turnaround." We need to follow the lead of schools like Bald Creek Elementary if the story is going to change for all students in North Carolina like the one above. Get serious, get busy and get this done. Stop forming committees to discuss the issue, the results are in and all that is necessary is action from those in charge of how our children are educated. Get busy!
